The 420 Minute: The Marijuana Majority

The 420 Minute: The Marijuana Majority
By Sarah Mulcahy

Alright, folks. Welcome back to The 420 Minute with a hot, new tip to help you vote for the right candidate this November. Fuck the party line, it’s about time we start supporting candidates that support us. This is the sesh zig-zag.

A.K.A. If you are against marijuana legalization and actively support Jeff Sessions’ (like, seriously!!! Your name is Sessions and you hate marijuana?!?!), then I will not vote for you. And I will find the candidates in support of legalization and tell every pothead I know.

So, Washington State’s 5th Congressional district finally has a decent opponent for the Republican vote-bot Cathy McMorris-Rodgers, currently representing her own interests in D.C. Someone told her she was from Washington and she clearly misunderstood (no offense D.C. I know you got your own issues on this)!!!

Now, I can hear your thoughts, stop feeling sorry for CMR. I’m not just blowing smoke (hee-hee) because she’s Republican.

Actual CMR quote regarding marijuana legalization: “I really come to it as a mom, and I think about my kids, I think about access to marijuana and to the other drugs that I believe it leads to.”

Sooo, Alexis Bortell’s mom isn’t thinking about those exact same things when it comes to marijuana? Oh, wait, she is. Only Alexis Bortell’s mom is concerned about her daughter’s ability to make it through a day without having a violent seizure and how to help her daughter access the only medication that works without going to prison.

What about all the other kids and moms out there that need this medicine? Do you think about them at all? What about the Veterans, who literally put their lives on the line for us, and their overwhelming support for legalization?

The clear challenger (though not the only other candidate in the race) is Democrat Lisa Brown. A former state senator, Lisa Brown supports the will of the voters in Washington state and after Jeff Sessions rescinded the Cole Memo earlier this year, Lisa Brown pledged her continued support of the legal marijuana industry in our state.

I hope she would support rescheduling at the federal level.

On April 27th Mayor of Seattle Jenny Durkan and City Attorney Pete Holmes filed a motion requesting the dismissal of all charges and cancelling out all convictions for misdemeanor marijuana possession during the 13 years leading up to legalization in Washington state.

Mayor Durkan was quoted in The Hill as saying this “is a necessary step to correct the injustices of what was a failed war on drugs, which disproportionately affected communities of color in Seattle.”

Ah, yes. The infamous war on drugs, started by Nixon and his cronies to associate people of color with heroin and the hippies with pot to delegitimize the anti-war and equality movements at the time. Almost two decades into the Twenty-first Century, it is time we stop letting the Nixon Administration decide the legality and morality of anything in this country, but especially regarding marijuana.

Recent polling shows 63% support for marijuana legalization across the country. 100% of Veterans between 18 and 30 support legalization. Doctors are prescribing MMJ for more and more patients, victims of Big Pharma’s opioid epidemic, to kick the addiction.

If you vote this November, forget the donkeys and elephants, roll a blunt and vote with your lungs. Personally, I’m done being treated like a criminal for using the only medication that works, that treats all my symptoms. Without any of the terrible, negative side effects (like complete absence of sex drive!! More on that bull ish later!) of prescriptions. I’m done hiding and I’m done being afraid.

Politicians beware. If you are opposed to pot then I’m opposed to you. And I’m not alone. We are the marijuana majority.

Thanks for reading. Keep calm and smoke on!
